Presentation transcript:

The MEASURE project received funding from the European Community's framework programme for research and innovation H2020 [H2020/ ] under grant agreement no MEASURE Metrics for Sustainability Assessment in European Process Industries

About the project Friedrich-Schiller- University Jena Beginning of the project: January 2015 Project duration: 15 months 8 partners from industry and academia

MEASURE Objectives Recommend best-suited LCSA evaluation tools Improve the consideration of sustainability assessment results in SPIRE projects by: -Enhancing the comparability between the outcomes of the projects -Supporting and facilitating the design of sustainable technologies within the SPIRE PPP program Provide a roadmap towards standardised sustainability assessment tools and methods in European process industries over the whole value chain. 3

MEASURE Consultation Process 4 Advisory board of stakeholders Online surveys Public workshops Short course Conference talks Discussions with experts, industrial associations… Literature review Cooperation with other SPIRE projects IDENTIFY open issues Review of the KEY MESSAGES of the roadmap from different stakeholder perspectives Discussion of RECOMMENDATIONS for future development needs MEASURE WS in Mechelen

Detailed Background Information 7 Overview of Background Documents available supplementing the MEASURE roadmap Current State of LCSA Current State in Resource Efficiency Evaluation Sector Report: Chemistry and FMCGs Sector Report: Metals and Automotive Sector Report: Waste Challenges of Cross-Sectorial Sustainability Assessment Towards Sustainability in SPIRE Innovation Projects Teaching materials Available at the MEASURE website:

Guidelines for assessment of SPIRE innovation projects Minimum and Best Practice measures for LCT assessments throughout project Determining baseline reference for comparison Sustainability criteria to report Measuring and reporting innovation success 9

Guidelines for assessment of SPIRE innovation projects 10  Recommendation: Use a minimum set of broadly accepted indicators Recommended metricsSPIRE sustainability goal by 2030 Cumulative energy demand (MJ) according to VDI 4600 guideline expressed in: - Non-renewable energy demand - Renewable energy demand A reduction in fossil energy intensity up to 30% from current levels Total material consumption (kg) grouped in: - Critical/non-critical - Fossil/non-fossil A reduction of up to 20% in non-reneable, primary raw material intensity compared to current levels Global warming potential calculated via infrared radiative forcing (100 years) (kg CO 2 - eq) based on IPCC data, 2013 Efficiency improvement of CO 2 – equivalent footprints of up to 40% compared to current levels Metrics for RE evaluation

11 Thank you!

Cooperation with other SPIRE Projects MEASURE focuses on (recommendations for) cross-sectorial life cycle sustainability assessments along the value chain. Target audience is mainly expert LCA practitioners STYLE aiming for a ‘toolkit’ for sustainability evaluation spanning multiple sectors that is easily usable by non-practitioners of sustainability assessments SAMT promotes cross-sectorial learning and uptake of the most promising tools by doing case studies and organizing workshops 12
