4 The repeating part of a decimal can be so long that it will not fit on a calculator. Most calculators round off repeating decimals to 9 or 10 decimal places. In applied problems, repeating decimals are generally rounded to a predetermined degree of accuracy.

Section 5.55 A car goes 587 mi on 23.2 gal of gasoline. The ratio of the number of miles drives to amount of gasoline used is gas mileage. Find the gas mileage and convert the ratio to decimal notation rounded to the nearest tenth. STEP 4 STEP 1 STEP 3 STEP 2

Section 5.56 ROUND OFF ERROR!

Section 5.57 PERFECT!

Section 5.58 Homework: Problem 23 Copy the problem, then convert to a decimal using division (show all work). Problem 55 Give the ratio, then change to a decimal using division (show all work), round as directed. Problem 63 – Use the 4 step approach to answer the question. Problems 77, 83 – copy the problem and solve top down (no = signs). Use the sand box to show work. Do not substitute work with use of the calculator.
