Neil Young Neil was born November 12, 1945 in Toronto, Ontario. As a child he survived polio, diabetes, epilepsy, and his parents divorce. He started out using the ukulele but then switched to guitar. He bounced around from band to band (Neil Young Biography). Back

Metaphor Back “Tin Soldiers and Nixon coming…” This verse that starts out the song as a metaphor. The Tin soldiers represent the Ohio National Guard that paraded into Kent State college campus on jeeps and army trucks. They were fully loaded with battle gear, gas masks, and bayonets. This line of the song was Neil’s contribution of the deaths of the people to President Richard Nixon for letting this happen.

Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly The theme of the song is the Tragedy at Kent State and how the shootings were unnecessary and did not need to occur. The protesting was their expression and that lives should not have been taken. Back

Mood a prevailing emotional tone or general attitude a distinctive emotional quality or character The mood of the song was anti- war, anti- Nixon, and remorseful to the 4 people lost in the Kent Massacre. The song suggested that the war was unnecessary and that the shootings were mainly Nixon’s fault, not the National Guard Alone. Also the seemed remorseful for the ones lost by saying “what if you found her dead on the ground? How can you run when you know?” Back

Historical References (Tin Soldiers) The National Guard were being referred to as tin soldiers in the song who were called in by Richard Nixon the President of the United States to stop these protestors of the Vietnam war. To whom were mounted on army trucks and fully loaded with gear. They shooting was done within a matter of 13 seconds and the distances from which the guns were fired were hundreds of feet away.tin soldiers Back

Historical References(We’re finally on our own) Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young wrote the line “ we’re finally on our own” to express the feeling of being free at college. You are on your own, so there is a sense of independence that comes along with college, you are practically an adult. Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young Back

Historical References (I hear the drumming) “ This summer I hear the drumming” refers to the National Guard parading into Kent State Campus and the sound of the guards on the ground has a ring to it like a soft hum of drums.Kent State Back

Historical References (Four Dead in Ohio) “Four Dead in Ohio” refers to the four students at Kent State who were killed. Kent State Along with the four fatal accidents, one was left paralyzed, and eight were left wounded. Back

Historical References (soldiers gunning us down) “ Soldiers gunning us down” refers to the National Guard, sent by President Nixon, who were positioned on the campus ready to shoot the Vietnam War protestors, as well as the Guardsmen who did shoot the victims. President Nixon Back
