Inserting Charts Once you insert a chart, Microsoft Excel is launched If Excel is not on your computer, PowerPoint uses Microsoft Graph Once data is entered into Excel, you do not have to save the Excel file, it automatically saves in click on the Edit Data icon on the Chart Tools Design Ribbon

Chart Tools Ribbons Chart Tools Design – allows the user to edit data, change the chart type, change the chart layout, and apply a Quick Style Chart Tools Format – allows you to format the chart colors, outline, etc.

Parts of a Chart Data Series: consists of all the data points for a particular category (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012) Example: On a bar chart, the bars that share a common color (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012)

Parts of a Chart Data Marker: One individual column or point in a series (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012) Example: The second blue bar in the chart Legend: provides a key to the information plotted on the chart (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012)

Parts of a Chart Chart Area: The entire area inside the chart container that holds background as well as plotted data (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012) Includes the plot area and the legend

Chart Labels Allow the audience to see determine what the chart represents Chart Title – The title that is usually centered over the entire chart Axis Labels – text that identifies information about the values on an axis (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012) Data Labels – Provide information about each data marker

Chart Labels Numbers along the vertical and horizontal axis can be adjusted by adjusting the axis scale

Chart Types To change the type of chart inserted on a slide, go to Chart Tools Design > Type Group > Change Chart Type Pie Chart: show the relationship of parts to a whole (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012) Draws its data from a single column or row of data (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012)

Chart Types Column Chart: good for comparing values side-by-side from multiple data series (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012) Default chart type Data is charted along the vertical axis (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012)

Chart Types Line Chart: shows the amount of change over time and total value across a trend

Formatting Charts To move a chart, click on the border and drag it to its new position To resize a chart, click on the outside border and drag OR press and hold the Shift key, then click the outside border and drag so that the height and width maintain their ratio (aspect) Individual elements (data markers, data labels, axis labels) can be hyperlinked to other files/websites Click on element and go to Insert > Hyperlink

Formatting Charts Quick Style – enables a user to quickly format a chart with different colors, effects, and background (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2012)
