SYMBOLISM is an object, action, or idea that represents something other than itself, often of a more abstract nature.

CHARACTERIZATION The act of creating and developing a character. Direct: when the author states or describes a character’s traits Indirect: author shows a character’s personality through his actions, thoughts, feelings, and words, or other character’s observations and reactions Characterization relies upon character’s traits (personality) and not upon his/her physical appearance.

CHARACTER STUDY 1. Choose a character from the novel. 2. Illustrate (or find a picture in a magazine) your character based on the information given in the text. 3. You must write at least 5 personality traits (adjectives and/or phrases) that describe the character. 4. You need at least one quote that demonstrates direct characterization, and one quote that demonstrates indirect characterization. (Write the entire quote and MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE PAGE NUMBERS!)

YOU WILL BE GRADED ON: Visual Presentation – how much time and effort fill up white space neat and attractive. Understanding of the character Clear engagement with text Accuracy of analysis of character

ALLEGORY A story with more than one level of meaning – a literal level and one or more symbolic levels. Allows the writer to make a moral, religious, or political point. Author is making a direct comment on life and society through the use of allegory in LOTF. EX: Ralph – Ralph represent the struggle for order and democracy in a society. This is evident by his attempting to set up some semblance by using the conch shell.
