Bankart Procedure By: Cassie Bobzin, Laura Erickson, Morgan Griebel, Alexis Mesman

Shoulder Anatomy  3 bones  Humerus  Clavicle  Scapula  Glenohumeral joint  Cavity fitting the humerus into the shoulder blade  Held together by labrum

Bankart Procedure  Reattaches and tightens shoulder ligaments

Bankart Procedure  Reattachment and tightening of the torn labrum and ligaments of the shoulder  Using sutures and small bone anchors Before: After:

Types of Procedures:  Arthroscopic Procedure:  Transglenoid sutures, suture anchors, or tacks are used to reattach the labrum or ligaments  Advancements have improved tissue fixation and holding the reattachment more securely

Risks of Surgery:  1) Nerve damage and poor placement  2) Wound rupture and infection after surgery  3) Shoulder stiffness, instability, and failure of repair after surgery

Treatment Intervention Post-Op  Many different protocols  General Recovery  Therapy should start the day after surgery  Average Recovery time =3-6 months  Early Rehab Stages  External Rotation must be limited

 Arthroscopic Procedure  Rotator cuff muscles  Strengthen early and progress quickly  Open Repair  Protect reattachment of the subscapularis for 6 weeks  Avoid strengthening of internal rotation Treatment Intervention Post-Op

Day 1 Post-Op  Wound inspection  Patient education  Immobilization  Exercises  Modalities

2-3 Weeks Post-Op  Wound Inspection & Removal of Sutures  Exercises  Grade 1 & 2 Glenohumeral Joint Mobs.  Modalities and Ice

4-5 Weeks Post-Op  Exercises  Grade 1 & 2 Glenohumeral Joint Mobs  Modalities & Ice

6-7 Weeks Post-Op  Discontinue Sling Use  Exercises  Grade 1 & 2 Glenohumeral Mobs  Modalities & Ice

8-9 Weeks Post-Op  Exercises  Grade 1 & 2 Glenohumeral Joint Mobs  Modalities & Ice

10-11 Weeks Post-Op  Exercises  Glenohumeral Joint Mobs  Modalities & Ice

12 Weeks Post-Op  Exercises  Modalities & Ice only if needed
