Self Esteem & Self Confidence Freshmen Health Do Now- In your journal: List three factors that impact someone's self esteem either positively or negatively.

Self Esteem Pride and belief in one's self and in achievement of one's potential! –Self Confidence –Self Respect –Self Worth –Self Acceptance –Pride –Contentment What are some factors that influence a persons self esteem?- From Do Now

Parents, teachers, and other authority figures often influence the ideas we develop about ourselves — particularly when we're little kids. If parents spend more time criticizing than praising a child, it can be harder for a kid to develop good self- esteem. Because teens are still forming their own values and beliefs, it's easy to build self-image around what a parent, coach, or other person says.

Criticism doesn't have to come from other people. Some teens also have an "inner critic," a voice inside that seems to find fault with everything they do. And people sometimes unintentionally model their inner voice after a critical parent or someone else whose opinion is important to them. Some people get so used to their inner critic being there that they don't even notice when they're putting themselves down.

High Self Esteem People with high self-esteem are realistic about their strengths and weaknesses and are able to set goals and work toward them with optimism and humor. They also competent in areas they consider important and do not take other people's negative impressions of them too seriously.

Low Self Esteem People with low self-esteem have a hard time honestly evaluating their strengths and weaknesses and often have an unrealistic, overall negative impression of themselves. They take other people's opinions of their strengths and weaknesses more seriously than they should. They do not feel competent in areas they consider important.

Self Worth Project “The Self-Worth project is an ongoing photo documentation of people embracing their deepest and most vulnerable insecurities.” “It is NOT meant to be political, religious or related to any race or orientation. It is a positive outlet for EVERYONE, because everyone should be included in sharing how they feel.”

Building Self Esteem Take a realistic look at your strengths and weaknesses and likes and dislikes. –What goals are realistic to pursue –What aspects of your personality and lifestyle do you seek to improve –How to identify your weaknesses without worrying about how others perceive them. Self-knowledge helps lay the foundation for high self-esteem!

Benefits of Self Esteem If you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to make good decisions about friends; diet; exercise; sex and abstinence; dangerous habits such as drugs, smoking, and drinking; and overall work habits If you feel good about yourself, you will want to take care of yourself.

Journal Entry Questions The following slides include some of the common responses to a few of the journal entry questions you completed. Take a look at the responses and relate them to what we just discussed about self esteem. Do you think there is any correlation between some of the responses and levels of self esteem?

What is the lie I tell myself? I am good enough That I am not good enough That I cant do something That people are better than me That I am as good as everyone else That I am happy when I know I am not Why do we tell ourselves these lies?

What would I do if I was ten times bolder? Be happy with myself Be able to achieve anything I wanted Not worry about how I look and what other people think of me Try out for teams or clubs Have the self confidence to do anything Be a role model Be completely different Show the other side of myself to people Express my feelings to others Stop worrying about how others see me Why don’t we do these things now?

What am I settling for? For average when I know I can do better Being mediocre Lower grades Why do we settle? My biggest fear? Not being successful Not living a happy life Never reaching my goals Not being perfect Where do our fears come from?

If I knew I would die in a month, what would I do? Do things I really want to do Have a great time Donate my hair to a cancer patient Be a bit boulder Live life to the fullest Be as joyful as possible and inspire others Skydive Spend time with everyone I love and tell them how I feel about them What stops us from doing these things now?
