Lowell Mason Lowell Mason was born on January 8, 1792 in Medfield, Massachusetts. At an early age he showed an intense interest in music, and began to compose when he was very young. Mason served as director of music at the Hanover, Green and Park Street churches, and as president of the Handel and Haydn Society in In 1833 he co-founded the Boston Academy of Music, and in 1837 taught music on a volunteer basis. This eventually led to the inclusion of music as part of the regular curriculum of the Boston public schools in Mason died on August 11, 1872 in Orange, New Jersey.

History In 2007, MENC celebrated one hundred years of advancing music education. Beginning with a small meeting of 104 music supervisors in Keokuk, Iowa, our organization has grown to include music educators at all levels from prekindergarten to university, college students preparing to become music teachers, high school music honor society members, music industry representatives, music supervisors, and parents and community members who support our cause. With more than 130,000 members, MENC is the world's largest arts education association.

NAfME NAfME, among the world's largest arts education organizations, marked its centennial in 2007 as the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. Through membership of more than 75,000 active, retired, and preservice music teachers, and with 60,000 honor students and supporters, NAfME serves millions of students nationwide through activities at all teaching levels, from preschool to graduate school.
