REVIEW The Looking Glass Library series reprints many of the most beloved children's’ books. In an attempt to bring the stories into a new age, the publishers have employed current writers to craft introductions to the timeless stories. In this edition, Neil Gaiman introduces Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Originally published piecemeal in magazines, Kipling’s jungle stories have been published numerous times in different combinations. Looking Glass has pulled together the entirety of Kipling’s Mowgli stories, as well as “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.”

In addition to the stories, this edition includes many of the line drawings that illustrated the original publications. Those include illustrations by the author’s father, John Lockwood Kipling. Kipling’s story of Mowgli--the human child raised by wolves--is a classic adventure and compelling allegory. Gaiman writes about how much the stories reflected Kipling’s own experiences, unsure of his place between the jungles and humanity.

“Although Mowgli has to leave, he can never truly be happy away from his jungle, just as he can never truly be part of it,” writes Gaiman. It’s quite heady stuff for what is often marketed as a child’s tale, but the complexity never detracts from the simple enjoyment a child can take from Mowgli’s world and his adventures with Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther. This edition of Kipling’s Mowgli stories will give children a book to return to often, no doubt to uncover many of the insights Gaiman shares, but for themselves and to their own betterment.

REVIEW When was the last time you stopped to smell a rose or notice the world around you? Step gently out your door and look closely at the world around you. A honeybee may fly past or a cricket may leap and land and then start to sing. A moth may come to rest with open wings. Look closely because a praying mantis may be looking at you. You might even notice tiny creatures as they shine with stardust and are splashed with morning dew. Illustrated with beautiful photographs, this poetry collection reminds us to take the time to notice all of the tiny creatures that share our world.

The photography in this book is amazing. The last two pages show pictures of each tiny creature featured in this poem and gives information about each of them.

REVIEW Ha loves her simple life with her family in Saigon. Surrounded by pleasures like her papaya tree and her family’s love, Ha can almost ignore what is happening around her…almost. Set in the midst of the Vietnam War, Ha’s story traces the life of a young girl whose family has been split apart just as the country of Vietnam was split, North and South. Her father is gone; sent to war, his whereabouts unknown. Her mother wants the best for her family…and America is supposed to be the land of opportunity.

Her family is taken in by an American sponsor living in Alabama. Ha seeks to learn to love America as she once loved Vietnam, but is faced with walls created by language and racial stereotypes. Written in free- verse poetry and filled with emotion, this novel traces history creating a touching tale of hope and promise.
