11-5 Graphing Linear Functions
Graphs can help you quickly see the relationship between two sets of data. Different types of data are graphed differently. Discrete vs. Continuous
Discrete data – are data that involve a count of items, such as numbers of people or cars. (plot data points and connect with a dashed line)
Discrete
Quick check The function c = 15t represents the cost (in dollars) of t adult tickets to a museum. Make a table and graph the function.
Continuous data – are data where numbers between any two data values have meaning. (plot data points and connect with a solid line)
Continuous
Quick Check The function h = 4,000 – 600m gives the height h of a skydiver in feet after she has been falling for m minutes. Make a table and graph the function.
Slope-intercept form: y= mx + b m = slope b = y intercept Linear function: a function with points that lie on a line y = mx + b f(x) = mx + b
