GRANT PLANNING DRESHER CENTER FOR THE HUMANITIES

ARE YOU SEEKING FUNDING FOR A RESEARCH PROJECT? Considerations –In what stage is your project? How complex is the project? –Is this an individual or collaborative project? –Are you looking for internal or external support? –Will you be requesting leave in order to complete your project? –What is your project timeline? (Do you have a book contract pending? If it’s a collaborative project, what is the timeframe for the group’s work?) –Have you had previous funding for the project? When?

IS THIS THE RIGHT SPONSOR? Do your homework! –What kinds of projects has the sponsor funded? –What is their award rate? (How difficult is it to get funding from this sponsor? Are you in for the long haul?) –What will and won’t they pay for? –Are you right for them? (Record of publication and previous support, references) –Do they provide sample proposals? –Do they provide information on their evaluation process and criteria –Will they answer questions and/or review draft proposals?

FUNDING PROPOSALS TAKE TIME! Pre-Award Process –Find the appropriate funder/sponsor for the project -- Is this sponsor a good match? –Determine what is allowed, required, or prohibited by the sponsor. –Determine what resources are required to carry-out the project. –Determine who will receive and administer the award (university, individual) –Develop the application (proposal narrative, budget development, preparation of supplemental materials). –Prepare the routing materials UMBC policies Levels of Approval: Department, College, and University (OSP) – multiple approvals if there are co-PIs or collaborators. –Submit the proposal: How, who, when?

WHERE TO GO FOR HELP AT UMBC? Dresher Center Assistance –Help with internal and external funding proposals –Sponsor/funder research –Proposal preparation: narrative, budget, timelines/work plans, assembly and formatting –Help in preparing routing materials –Develop faculty learning opportunities CAHSS Dean’s Office, Office of Sponsored Programs PLAN EARLY!
