City of students Tampere is (after Helsinki) the main ”student city” of Finland. Tampere (Tampere City Region) has -42 comprehensive schools (119) with 16,486 (34,520) basic level students -4 specialized schools, in which basic teaching is in Finnish, Swedish, English, French, and German -12 upper secondary schools (18) and 1 upper secondary school for the adults with 6,000 students (7,000) -Vocational Education and Training / TREDU, Ahlman, Varala Sports Institute, Tampere College of Services (Valkeakoski, SASKY, LPKKY) -Universities: University of Tampere with more than 15,000 students, Tampere University of Technology with 10,500 students and University of Applied Sciences with 10,000 students. Vocational Education and Training in Finland In Finland VET is mostly provided by educational institutions, but apprenticeship training is also available. VET is provided in national study fields and qualifies more than a 100 occupations. There are total of 116 study programmes leading to 52 different qualifications. The qualifications have been developed in co-operation with working life representatives. Basic structure of vocational qualification Core curriculum (2000) 120 credits (= three years) break down to: Core subjects: 20 credits –Compulsory studies (16 credits) –Elective studies (4 credits) Vocational studies: 90 credits –On-the-job learning (minimum 20 credits) –Vocational skills demonstrations (2006) –Common vocational studies –Special vocational studies by study programme Free choice studies: 10 credits Student councelling (min. 1,5 credits) and a final project (2 credits) are included in studies. (One credit equals 40 hours of work)
