CAETS 2017 Engineering a Better World Engineering a Better World is a flagship global conference, bringing national academies of engineering from around the world together with international development stakeholders to discuss the global importance of engineering for international development. The International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS), is a global network of 26 national engineering academies. Their Presidents, International Secretaries and CEOs will be among the most eminent global engineers with a strong track record in promoting engineering careers and advice nationally, and expertise in building strong, authoritative, inclusive and respected institutions. The conference aims to align the national capabilities of these academies to global need, and to leverage the academies’ expertise and experience to build engineering capacity across the developing world.

Madrid is the capital of Spain. It is a modern metropolitan city and an economical and industrial center of Spain and, with its population of nearly 3,5 million people, is also the biggest city in Spain. It is located in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, and is surrounded by mountains and natural parks. Although it is located in the centre of the country, it has traditionally been the hub between different areas of Spain and is therefore connected to all major Spanish cities by train, road or air.

Madrid has a lot of interesting attractions that offer both culture and amusement. The city is full of great monuments, like the Royal Palace, the Plaza Mayor or the many statuettes, and for people interested in art, the museums del Prado, Reina Sofia or Thyssen have some of the most fantastic collections of famous Spanish painters like Veláquez, Goya, Picasso or Miró. If you like to be entertained, Madrid has two big amusements parks and there are regular international concerts, big markets, parades and other activities going on.

The Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain is the first national Academy created under the reign of H.M. Juan Carlos I. The first 36 Constituent Members were named by a Ministerial Order dated December 12, Following the first years of operations in which - among other activities - the Internal Statutes and Regulations were elaborated by the Constituent Members, new members were elected, till to fill the maximum number of 60 Full Members, through calls for applications, from among engineering professionals whose contributions and careers are especially relevant to technological, industrial and economic development, and to the development of engineering in the country. The Royal Academy of Engineering is integrated by Members from the different branches of Engineering. Twenty three Full Members come from outside Madrid, which gives an idea of their significant distribution throughout the country.

The Royal Academy has merited international accolades and is a member of CAETS, the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences, and of Euro-CASE, the European Council of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering. Of special relevance were the commemorative events held on the 10 th and 20 th Anniversary of the Academy's creation, which took place in different cities around the country and focused on issues such as education, energy, environment, infrastructure, transport, computer technology and telecommunications. On May, 2005, stemming from an initiative by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the "Pro Rebus Academiae" Foundation was founded, for the essential purpose of backing, as much as its capacities allow, the activities of the Academy.

On June, 2005 the Spanish Government, granted the Royal Academy of Engineering the Palace of Marqués de Villafranca (which forms part of Spain's Historic Patrimony) as its headquarters, where the corporation initiated its services and the performance of its activities.
