Elements of Literature  You will take notes.  We will read stories in class.  You will analyze the effectiveness of each short stories based on the terms discussed in this presentation.

SETTINGSETTING The time and place of the story: PAST, PRESENT, OR FUTURE?? SEASON? WEATHER??

How was setting important in the following films?

FIRST PERSON P.O.V In first person point-of- view, a story character acts as the narrator, telling the story through his/her eyes. The perspective from which the narrator tells the story

THIRD PERSON P.O.V The narrator is not a character in the story. Instead, this narrator views the vents through the eyes of more than one of the characters. Q: How does point-of-view affect a story ?

This introduces the basic situation (premise) while identifying the main characters.

PLOT The sequence of events that propels the story forward is called the….. …which is heavily influenced by character’s actions. “Plot” has several parts or categories….

CONFLICT There are two types of conflict : EXTERNAL INTERNAL When a characters battles outside forces, such as other people, animals, technology, or forces of nature. When struggle that takes place in a character’s mind. It may require a difficult decision that will change his/her life.

Internal Conflict  Internal conflict occurs when a character must make a difficult choice

EXTERNAL CONFLICT Dr. Evil VS. Austin Powers External Conflicts:  Man vs. Man  Man vs. Animal  Man vs. Nature  Man vs. Machine  Man vs. Society Central CONFLICT Main conflict; one that is the primary concern

The juiciest part of the part – the most interesting, most suspenseful part is the climax… CLIMAX How the story is concluded; what happens to the main characters in as the story ends? DENOUEMENT (Resolution) EXPOSITION (Introduction)

Direct & Indirect Characterization Direct Characterization Indirect Characterization The author states a character’s traits. Used for minor characters. “shows”, not just tells/Allows reader to draw own conclusions about the character

Theme The main point or message about life that the author shares with the reader. What is the author trying to say??

MOOD and ATMOSPHERE Example: mysterious, funny, dramatic… MOOD is the general feeling the author creates

ANTAGONIST “The Bad Guy” PROTAGONIST “The Good Guy”

DIALECT Form of language spoken by a group from a particular region; adds flavor to characters and contributes to the setting

Flashback …is a section of a story that interrupts the sequence of events to relate an event from THE PAST. Forrest Gump is series of flashbacks that Forrest, the narrator, tells while he’s waiting for the bus.

The entire plot of Titanic is presented as a flashback through the eyes of _____? Why is flashback an effective tool for an author?

Sometimes, authors give CLUES that suggest events that have yet to occur. This helps to create SUSPENSE. How do scary movies use music to foreshadow? Think of some movies that use foreshadowing.

ALLUSION "It was just like Romeo and Juliet, only it ended in tragedy. A reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature. Allusions are often indirect or brief references to well-known characters or events.

IRONY Occurs when a character says or does something exactly opposite of what we’d expect that character to say or do.

A symbol is anything that stands for or represents something else. They are usually concrete objects or images that represent abstract ideas.

SATIRE A story in which human vice, ideas, governments, and organization are attacked through irony, derision, or wit.
