What Is a Species? A species is a group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring Objective: Understand the Main Concepts in Evolution Key Words: Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere

What Is a Species? Objective: Understand the Main Concepts in Evolution Key Words: Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere

All the individuals of a single species that live in a specific area. What Is a Population? Objective: Understand the Main Concepts in Evolution Key Words: Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere

A combination of all the different populations that live and interact in the same environment What Is a Community? Objective: Understand the Main Concepts in Evolution Key Words: Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere

All living and nonliving things that interact in a specific area. Examples: a pond, a lake, a desert, a forest, an aquarium,… What Is an Ecosystem? Objective: Understand the Main Concepts in Evolution Key Words: Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere

All of Earth’s ecosystem. The biologically inhabited portion of Earth, including all the water, land, and air in which organisms survive. What Is a Biosphere? Objective: Understand the Main Concepts in Evolution Key Words: Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere

Community Biosphere Population Ecosystem Individual Species Objective: Understand the Main Concepts in Evolution Key Words: Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere 6. Organize the ecological concept in the diagram: Ecosystem, Biosphere, Population, Individual, and Community Community Population Biosphere Individual Species Ecosystem

Give an example of population, community and ecosystem based on the picture below.populationcommunityecosystemEXAMPLE

Read the following paragraphs describing a specific ecosystem. Find the biotic and abiotic factors, and the different populations and communities that form that ecosystem. Tropical rainforests are found in Asia, Africa, South America, Central America, and on many of the Pacific islands. They are often found along the equator. Almost half of the world's tropical rainforests are in the South American country Brazil. What about the climate? Humidity is high and temperature remains constant about 25 C during the whole year. The supply of rainfall is constant everyday, between 200 and 400 cms a year. Tropical rainforests have more species of plants and animals than any other biome. The combination of heat and moisture makes this biome the perfect environment for more than 15 million plants and animals. Many of the plants used in medicine can only be found in tropical rainforests. Rainforest is rich in a great variety of plant species, as trees, lianas, ferns, orchids,… Also, a wide variety of animal species inhabit tropical rain forest: monkeys, bats, squirrels, parrots, birds, snakes, lizards, tapirs, antelope, deer, spiders, insects, termites, bees, butterflies, moths, ants. Objective: Understand the Main Concepts in Evolution Key Words: Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere
