P ATHS TO P ROGRESS : Building Cultural Capital & Competence 2016 MIMSAC P RESENTATION B Y Mary E. Clark Belmont University

R EMINDER The purpose of this event to provide a safe environment that will allow for an authentic discussion about the topic at hand. While we all may not agree it is important that we value what each of us brings to the discussion.

B ACKGROUND In an age of "Black Lives Matters", “stay mad Abby", perpetual bullying, and increasingly violent hate crimes against our LGBTQO, religious, gender and ethnic communities, how can institutions with decentralized methods of addressing multiculturalism foster communities of diversity and inclusion?

G OALS This interactive workshop seeks to provide attendees with strategies that will educate, empower and enhance their institutions, students, faculty, staff and surrounding communities to effective and affective activists.  develop specific programming/initiatives that will educate and support the leadership development of undergraduate students as it relates to diversity, inclusion and activism.  identify areas of success, challenges and opportunities as it relates to the engagement and education of the faculty and staff at their institution.  identify real solutions that can be implemented at their institutions that will assist institutions from a mindset of forced obligation to mindful and natural inclusion.
