Defining Success Tangled Up In Angles

In this lesson we will: M.7.G.5 - Discover facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical and adjacent angles. - Formulate a method using these facts so we may write and solve simple equations to find the measure of an unknown angle in a given figure.

Why parallel lines and angles are important to us… Parallel lines are used when marking lines and installing guardrails along highways. Civil engineers use parallel lines and transversals when designing roads, bridges, tunnels, sewage systems and other structures. Architects use shapes, lines and angles when they create plans for residential, commercial and public places. Artists create paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and collages by arranging lines, angles and shapes.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve problems that involve parallel lines, transversals and angles. The CSX bridge in Charleston carries the trains across the Kanawha River. The bridge appears to be perpendicular to both banks of the river. Using the skills provided in this lesson, you will be able to explain that the measure of the corresponding angles formed by the bridge and the two parallel banks of the river are each 90 degrees.

By the end of this lesson... You will be able to: - Describe the relationship of supplementary, complementary, vertical and adjacent angles. - Write and solve simple equations to find the measure of an unknown angle in a given figure.

Let's get started! You will soon be able to: - Describe supplementary, complementary, vertical and adjacent angles. - Create a simple equation to find the measure of an unknown angle in a given figure.
