TEKS Review Update Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved. The English and Spanish language arts and reading TEKS review committees are expected to finalize their recommendations to the State Board of Education (SBOE) this summer. The TEKS review committees will convene for their next face-to-face meeting in late April. At the April meeting, the committee will review guidance provided by the State Board of Education (SBOE); ensure vertical and horizontal alignment; and finalize their recommendations for revisions to the TEKS.

In 2015 the 84 th Texas Legislature (Regular Session) passed legislation directing the commissioner of education to develop and make available the following professional development opportunities to Texas public school teachers: Literacy achievement academies for teachers who provide reading instruction to students at the kindergarten or first, second, or third grade level Reading-to-learn academies for teachers who provide reading comprehension instruction to students at the fourth or fifth grade level
Reading Academies Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved. Academies will be made available by education service centers (ESCs) throughout the state. The agency is required to grant priority for academy participation to teachers employed at campuses at which 50% or more of the students enrolled are educationally disadvantaged. Additional prioritization will occur to allow teachers from as many priority campuses as possible to attend academies. Information regarding priority campuses is available on the Academies webpage
Reading Academies Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved. Each grade level academy will be three consecutive days in length. Academies will be aligned to the current ELAR TEKS for each respective grade. Academies will be designed to provide support to teachers who provide instruction to ELLS, students with disabilities, and gifted/talented students. A teacher who successfully completes an academy will be eligible to receive a $350 stipend.

In April 2016, the SBOE approved for second reading and final adoption changes to the Foundation High School Program graduation requirements. The amendments update the rules and make the following changes: Allow a course to count as part of the set of four courses for more than one endorsement Require students to complete English I, II, and III prior to the advanced English course

Remove specific references to AP and IB courses from the Foundation High School Program and endorsement course requirements and replace those references with a general reference regarding appropriate substitutions “AP and IB courses may be substituted as appropriate for required courses. A single AP or IB course may not count toward more than one credit required for graduation.... but may count toward both a required course and an endorsement.” (TAC §74.11(h)) The adopted rules will be available on the SBOE Adopted, Not Yet Effective rules webpage in the coming weeks

Prekindergarten Guidelines In fall 2015, TEA established a 13-member review committee consisting of classroom teachers and administrators from early childhood programs in public schools and higher education faculty and researchers from across the state to participate in the revision of the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines. The Texas Education Agency has posted the new Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines (updated 2015). The updated guidelines will be implemented beginning with school year.
