Earth and Moon Motions

Quick Write In this chapter, you will learn about the motions of Earth and Moon. Write down these questions and answer them in complete sentences. 1. What 2 motions does the Earth have? 2. What 2 motions does the Moon have?

1. Daily Earth motions? The Earth spins -(rotates once every 24 hours) The Earth orbits the sun - (once every 365 days) 2. Is the Earth tilted? Yes, 23.5 degree tilt (causes seasons).

3. Solstices? Summer solstice - the sun is directly overhead in Summer (23.5 degrees N lat). Winter solstice - the sun is directly overhead in Winter (23.5 degrees S lat). 4. Equinoxes? When the lengths of day and night are equal.

Check for Understanding What 2 motions does the Earth have? The times of year when the Sun is directly overhead 23.5 degrees N and S lat are what? Equinoxes or Solstices Movie

5. Moon motion? It spins at the same speed as Earth. We only see one side of the Moon. 6. Synchronous rotation? The fact that the Earth and Moon spin at the same speed. 7. Other Moon motions? Moon orbits the Earth.

8. What two objects affect the tides on Earth? Sun and Moon. 9. Lunar eclipse? Earth is in between the Sun and Moon and blocks the moon. 10. Solar eclipse? Moon is in between the Sun and Earth and blocks the Sun.

Check for Understanding What is meant by synchronous rotation of the Moon? What 2 motions does the Moon have? When the Moon is blocked it is called a _____ eclipse, and when the Sun is blocked it is called a ______ eclipse. Solar/Lunar or Lunar/Solar Lunar Eclipse Solar Eclipse
