Solar and Lunar Eclipses!
Where are we going? 4.f Distinguish the structure and movements of objects in the solar system. (DOK 2) ► Eclipses relative to the position of the sun, moon, and Earth
By the end of today… ► Achievers on the ROAD to college will be able to identify and describe solar and lunar eclipses. ► Achievers on the ROAD to college will be able to answer our question of the day.
Question of the Day ► What causes an eclipse?
Eclipses Eclipses happen when the (1)Earth, Sun and Moon line up. This makes the (2) shadow of one fall on the other.
Solar Eclipse ► Occurs when the (3) moon passes between Earth and the sun, blocking the sunlight from reaching Earth.
Solar Eclipse ► In a solar eclipse, the (4) Moon’s shadow falls on the Earth. ► From the Earth, it looks as if the Sun has been “blocked out.”
Solar Eclipse This only happens during a (5) New Moon
Solar Eclipse Movie and Pictures ► ► On my computer the video is only sound…I’m going to try it on my school computer and see!
Lunar Eclipse ► A lunar eclipse occurs at a full moon when (6) Earth is directly between the moon and the sun.
Lunar Eclipse ► In a lunar eclipse, the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon. ► From the Earth, it looks as if the (7) Moon gets darker.
Lunar Eclipse ► Only happens during a (8) Full Moon ► If you were standing on the Moon, you would see the Sun blocked out!
Lunar Eclipse ► Watch how the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon. unar_anim.html unar_anim.html
Review Eclipses are caused by the Earth, Sun, and Moon being perfectly in line In a solar eclipse, we see the Sun blocked out. In a lunar eclipse, we see a shadow on the Moon.
