Presentation transcript:

Kinetic Sculpture is art that contains moving parts or depends on motion for its effect. The moving parts are generally powered by wind, a motor or the observer. Kinetic art encompasses a wide variety of overlapping techniques and styles.moving parts

Objectives To understand and experiment with the elements of "time, change, and motion" in the construction of three-dimensional forms. To explore how sculptural form can be understood as the product of dynamic forces. To explore formal elements of art and design including color, balance, symmetry, line, and unity To introduce a range of methods for creating kinetic sculptures powered by the wind.

Marcal Duchamp is credited with the first kinetic sculpture in 1913 with His bicycle wheel.

kinetic sculptures have parts that move or that are in motion. Sound sculpture can also, in some cases, be considered kinetic sculpture. The motion of the work can be provided in many ways: mechanically through electricity, steam or clockwork; by utilizing natural phenomena such as wind or wave power; or by relying on the spectator to provide the motion, by doing something such as cranking a handle.Sound sculptureelectricity steamclockwork

The 1950s and 1960s are seen as a golden age of kinetic sculpture, during which time Alexander Calder and George Rickey pioneered kinetic sculpture Alexander CalderGeorge Rickey

Notice this one is on a BASE not hanging – definitely an option!!

This has a hand crank that makes the fish move up and down and wiggle

A mobile is a type of kinetic sculpture constructed to take advantage of the principle of equilibrium. It consists of a number of rods, from which weighted objects or further rods hang. The objects hanging from the rods balance each other, so that the rods remain more or less horizontal. Each rod hangs from only one string, which gives it freedom to rotate about the string. A popular creator of mobile sculptures was Alexander Calder.mobileAlexander Calder

Assignment You will make a KINETIC sculpture It must either hang (be a mobile) or have a base You may choose your materials BUT you cannot do cookie cutter clay forms -sorry Forms can be painted any way you please or left in their natural state. Piece MUST BALANCE on its own.

Some Ideas Origami forms – like paper cranes in different sizes Paper mache “egg” forms Plastic farm animals in different sizes Metal forms painted in colors and/or patterns Burnished metal forms Wood forms

Grading:100 points Drawings of ideas and mechanics – at least 3!!! You will be graded on size: piece should span at least 18” in one dimension Shapes or forms should show good craft in their edges or construction. Balance is IMPORTANT it should hang evenly or balance evenly on its base. Mechanics – the structure or skeleton olding it together should be well thought out and involve more than 3 elements. GOOD LUCK!!!!
