Main Idea 8.5h, 8.6g

Content Objective(s): I can keep verbs the same in sentences and paragraphs using the past, present, and future tense of verbs. Language Objective(s)/Learning Target(s): so that all the actions happen at the same time. I can change the verbs in a sentence so that all the actions happen at the same time.

Standard(s): 8.8 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and paragraphing. 8.8d maintain correct verb tense across paragraphs.

VERB TENSE The simple present tense is used for actions occurring at the time of the speaking or for actions occurring regularly in the present. A writer would choose to use present tense in his/her writing when he/she is trying to get the reader to picture the scene in his/her head as if it is happening right now. The future tense is used for actions that will occur in the future. A writer would choose to use the future tense when talking about something that is forthcoming or predictable. The past tense is used when the writer is wants the reader to know that he/she is talking about something that has already taken place. A writer would choose to use the past tense when talking about something that already took place

Consistency of verb tense Consistency of verb tense means that all actions in a sentence that happen (or happened) at the same time are in the same tense. Consistency of verb tense means that all actions in a sentence that happen (or happened) at the same time are in the same tense. If all of the actions happen in the present or happen all the time, use the present tense for all verbs in the sentence. If all of the actions happen in the present or happen all the time, use the present tense for all verbs in the sentence. If all of the actions happened in the past, use the past tense for all verbs. If all of the actions happened in the past, use the past tense for all verbs. When you edit your writing, make sure that any time a verb tense changes it is because the action the verb describes happened at a different time. Otherwise, the shift in tenses causes an inconsistency. Examples: Consistency of verb tense Inconsistent: The movie started just as we take our seats. (The actions both happened at the same time, but started is in the past tense, and take is in the present tense.) Inconsistent: The movie started just as we take our seats. (The actions both happened at the same time, but started is in the past tense, and take is in the present tense.) Consistent, present tense: The movie starts just as we take our seats. (The actions and verb tenses are both in the present.) Consistent, present tense: The movie starts just as we take our seats. (The actions and verb tenses are both in the present.) Consistent, past tense: The movie started just as we took our seats. (The actions started and took both happened in the past, and both are in the past tense.) Consistent, past tense: The movie started just as we took our seats. (The actions started and took both happened in the past, and both are in the past tense.)

Using consistent verb tense Identify the verbs. Decide if there are unnecessary shifts in tense. Those who want a good workout needed different kinds of equipment than those interested in an easy ride.

Independent work Directions: Underline and correct the inconsistent verbs so that all the actions happen at the same time in the past tense.

Directions: Some of the sentences are correct, and some are not. For those that are incorrect, circle and then change the first verb in the sentence so that it will correspond to the underlined verb. If no change is necessary write (C) for correct on the line. Just as Brandi spoke, the microphone turns on. __________________________________________________ I prefer sugar-free gum, but my cousin liked rock candy. __________________________________________________ I never studied in elementary school and have trouble passing tests. __________________________________________________ Last night, I did not sleep well even though I went to bed early. __________________________________________________

Exit ticket: Complete the closed passage on verb tense consistency by providing a suitable word or phrase from the vocabulary list provided. Vocabulary: verb tense, verb tense changes, verb, consistency of verb tense, past, present, future, shift in tenses, inconsistency A writer must be careful to use the ___________________ that correctly shows the time of an event or action. ____________________________ means that all actions in a sentence that happen (or happened) are in the same tense. We use the _________________________ for all actions occurring at the time of the speaking or for actions occurring regularly. The ________________________ is used If all of the actions that has already taken place, while the __________________________ is used for things use the actions that will occur in the future. When you edit your writing, make sure that any time a ________________________ it is because the action the ________________________ describes happened at a different time. Otherwise, the _______________________ causes an __________________________________.
