Web 2.0 By Ashley Richardson

What is Web 2.0? It allows easier information sharing, user- centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web Allows users to have more control over their data Term was coined in 1999 by Darcy DiNucci O’Reilly Media hosted first conference – Argued that “the costumers are building the business for you” – Wanted to harness text, videos, and pictures to create value

Where is Web 2.0 Used? Podcasting Audio Blogging Tagging Social Bookmarking Social Networking Wikis Media Sharing Sites

Web 1.0 vs. 2.0 Web 1.0 Sites are static – Provide information, but never change Sites are not interactive – Visitors cannot add, alter, or contribute to the site Applications are proprietary – Philosophy of Web 1.0 is that users can’t see how applications on the site work Web 2.0 Sites are dynamic – Account owners can update (MySpace, Facebook) Sites are interactive – Anyone can visit and alter, add o contribute (Wikis, blogs) Open source program – The source code for the application or program is available for free

This tag cloud is an example something that uses Web 2.0. It has also come up with a list of words to describe Web 2.0

Web 2.0 Application in Education Can engage students in a new way Participate on a more global level More interaction between teachers and students Gives students more opportunities to take learning into their own hands Provides resources that are accessible to anyone, anywhere More interaction and collaboration between teachers

Web 2.0 Criticism Reliability – allows anyone, anywhere to share their opinions regardless of knowledge, credentials or biases. Spam Etiquette – Code of conduct on blogs or other interactive sites
