The Situation across the State…and at CSUN: In 2007, 46.2% of regularly admitted first-time freshmen at the CSUs needed remediation in English system wide. The Importance of Being College ReadyThe Importance of Being College Ready Only 24% of admitted freshmen who take developmental reading earn a degree. Overview of CSUN Outreach Efforts GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) – Competitive Grant from US DOE – Eleven Schools Goal: To significantly increase the number of low income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. TRiO (Educational Talent Search (2) and Upward Bound Programs) – Competitive Grant from US DOE – Fifteen ETS Schools (9 Middle Schools/6 High Schools) and Three Upward Bound High Schools Goal -To increase the number of first generation and low income students that attend postsecondary institutions. K2C (Kids To College Program supported by the Sallie Mae Fund) – Three Middle Schools Goal: To bring early awareness to the importance of higher education by introducing 6 th graders to college life. 10/13/08LAUSD STEM Presentation
