Outline 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 2 Background Flux Simulation Python & Mathematica (Carol) Initial problems Python GEANT4 Python/GEANT4 comparison Problems Future plans

Background Detector flux simulation: done by a python code formula: 3-body decay + boost to 3.8GeV Muon beam energy: 3.8GeV + 10% 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 3

Flux Simulations 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 4 Left: Mathematica Right: Python Plots by Carol

Flux Simulation 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 5 Carol GuimaraesDavid Adey 226m straight180m straight

Initial Problems Python results has the same shape as Mathematica results “Unphysical” discontinuity at the tails Less ν e – i.e. flux not symmetric between two neutrinos 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 6

GEANT4 Simulation 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 7 GEANT4 neutrino flux simulation flux energy distribution depends muon decay models handled by Monte Carlo simulation independent of the formulas used by Python Cross check with Python results to understand what’s going on Flux Monte Carlo will be very useful for NuStorm

GEANT4 Simulation 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 8 GEANT4 muon particle gun simulation Neutrino Flux to detector -> root macro Correction: straight lengh = 180m

GEANT4 Simulation 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 9

Python/GEANT4 Comparison 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 10

Problems 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 11 Note: Only 1e8 Mu+ (~5e10 POT) Tail shapes completely different Python tail rather “unphysical” Python flux is not symmetric between the two particles GEANT4 flux is symmetric between the two particles Python flux ~ 4X GEANT4 flux

Future Plans 11/22/2013 NuStorm Nov 2013 Workshop Mitchell Yu 12 This GEANT4 flux simulation can potentially be very useful Need to understand the discrepancies a lot better Also need to tune it to a more accurate simulation muon decay position distribution Python (realistic?): uniform along the straight GEANT4: particle gun at beginning of straight, decay timing is handled by g4 muon decay model include detector details in the root macro where the neutrino interaction is in the detector cross section calculation etc.
