Accelerated Reading (A/R): Electronic Reading Journal (AReJournal) …more than just a reading log By Marisa Garduno-DaSilva 8 th Grade Language Arts/ELD Crittenden Middle School Mt. View, CA 94043

Your Accelerated Reading! What’s New in 2010… Technology and Reading…Say Whaaa? Writing about reading…huh? Reading Level…yadda, yadda, yadda It’s all about the Plan, Stan PDSA…Who’s that?

Technology and Reading…Say Whaa? Computers and A/R the same ◦ Take the AR test for each book ◦ Print a TOPS report for each test passed Google Apps for each student  Your own Account  Microsoft Applications  MSWord, MSExcel, MSPowerPoint Learn to use MSExcel with A/R

Use TOPS report with MSExcel What I Read… How many books did I read?Title of BookAuthor ATOS Book Level Quiz Date Fiction/N on- Fiction? Word Count Example > Allosaurus (Dinosaurs) Michael P. Goecke2.78/25Non Fiction600 My Progress in Marking Period 1 (8/24/10 to 11/19/10) Average Percent Correct on Test Points Earned (as of this Test) Goal (Points by end of T1) Percent of My Goal (as of this test) Average ATOS BL (book level) Goal (Level by end of T1) Quizzes Passed Quizzes Taken Words Read (as of this book) 96% % ,732 Level of Book Number of words I read How I’m doing so far in the Trimester

Writing about reading…huh? It’s called “response to literature”  write about the theme, plot, characters, or other parts of a chapter, story, book, or poem. Besides reading and understanding what you read… ◦ Writing is also a judge of your school success Writing about what you read is a necessary responsibility for participation in your community life and in the job world

Writing with A/R What is the story about? My Daily Reading How many books did I read? Title Plot (events that happened) Setting (Where/When the Story takes place) Main Character(s) Total Pages in Book Days it took me to read this book? Total Page divided by Days read = pages per day Example > The Outsiders A group of rich kids go against a group of poor kids1950's Pony Boy, Cherry How did I connect to this story? (Respond to 1) Text-to-self: What does this remind me of in my life? What is this similar to in my life? How is this different from my life? Text-to-text: What does this remind me of in another book? How is this text similar to other things I’ve read? How is this different from other books I’ve read? Text-to-world: What does this remind me of in the real world? How did this story relate to the world around me? This story reminded me of when I tried to be friends with someone and their friends didn't like me, so they told her to stay away from me. This story reminds of East Side Dreams. The character in East Dreams did not make good choices just like Pony Boy in The Outsiders. They both kept getting into trouble because of fighting. This story reminds of the world because a lot of kids don't have their fathers or mothers at home. They make bad choice and get into trouble when they think no one is caring for them. You will be completing an Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet with information… …after each AR Book you read!

Reading Level - yadda, yadda, yadda… Recent studies of the AR program report positive findings Library use and/or reading levels increase after the introduction of an AR program  (Anderson, 2001; Ganter, 2000; and Lawson, 2000). Student reading levels increased after the introduction of the AR program  (Facemire, 2000) and Scott,1999) This year, your greatest focus for Language Arts is IMPROVING YOUR READING LEVEL! A/R Works! …Just read!

AR Reading Levels Take the A/R STAR reading test  Provides you with your Book Level to start the year  Begin reading books at that level The more you read at your level… …the faster your reading level improves What I Read… Title of BookAuthor ATOS Book Level Quiz Date Fiction/N on- Fiction? Word Count Allosaurus (Dinosaurs) Michael P. Goecke2.78/25Non Fiction600

Read Book at Your Level Vocabulary Is Easier You Read More Understanding Improves Level Increases Success!

It’s all about the Plan, Stan If you want success, you must PLAN for it! The AReJournal has four worksheets that will guide you towards your success ◦ “Connecting to Literature” ◦ “TOPS History” ◦ “100% Points Goal Tracking” ◦ “My PDSA” Analyzing your progress will keep you on track!

100% Points Goal Tracking Still tracking book points you earned Now…you track on-line Colors change as you get closer to 100% % % % %!!

PDSA…Who’s that? The PDSA will help you increase your reading level ◦ P = Plan (What do I want to improve?) ◦ D = Do (Begin reading and moving forward) ◦ S = Study (How am I doing?) ◦ A = Act (Actions I need to take to make it happen) PDSA PLAN: To IMPROVE My Reading Level! What is my Level today? DO: HOW will I improve my reading level? STUDY: DID my reading level improve? Explain ACT: What I must do to CONTINUE to improve? August September ATOS BL = 4.6 Raise my reading level to 5.0 in 30 days day check… -Read 20 pages a day - Read at my level -Make time to read
