Reading Strategies: Poetry O Read the poem aloud: pause at the end of thoughts and not always the end of the line, listen for rhyme and rhythm. O Visualize the images created O Try to figure out the theme (what the author is saying) O Let your understanding grow. Allow yourself to see something new each time you read the poem.

Be an active reader! O Circle words that are new to you. O Underline key words and phrases. O Note word patterns and repetition. O Write down your questions, reaction, and ideas about the work in the margin.
