O Suggestions: talents, a place where you were born, a type of pet you have, a place where you have lived or visited, another language that you speak, a special event in your life, something that has happened to you.

Why is it important to establish goals? Our first unit this year invites us to think about the way people grow through the goals they set and the difficulties they encounter. Read the three quotes and choose the quote you like best.

Explain what you think one of these quotes means on your sticky note. O "Fate chooses your relations, you choose your friends.“ - Jacques Delille ( ) French poet. O "It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.“ - Ralph Waldo Emerson O "True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation." - George Washington

Exit Card O Record 3 expectations we have for students in this class. O Record 2 expectations you have for the teacher or teachers in this class. O Identify and record one word in any of the three quotes you think is most important to the message of the lesson today.

Homework: O Letter to Miss Tysko O Signed copy of the classroom expectations (HW points)

Review the quotes, choose the quote you like best, write it on the front cover of your portfolio.

Setting Goals O What is a goal? O Why is it important to set goals? O Is your goal SMART?

Goal Writing: What makes a good goals? O Goals should be specific. O Goals should be measurable. O Goals should be realistic.

Writing Our Own Goals: O Identify and record one writing goal and one reading goal for the school year.

Reading Poetry O We are going to read a poem that relates to friendship. O How do you read a poem?

Reading Strategies: Poetry O Read the poem aloud: pause at the end of thoughts and not always the end of the line, listen for rhyme and rhythm. O Visualize the images created O Try to figure out the theme (what the author is saying) O Let your understanding grow. Allow yourself to see something new each time you read the poem.

Be an active reader! O Circle words that are new to you. O Underline key words and phrases. O Note word patterns and repetition. O Write down your questions, reaction, and ideas about the work in the margin.

“Oranges”- Gary Soto O Read the second stanza silently O Annotate (paraphrase and think about) each statement in the stanza with someone in your section. O Write your annotations on the paper. O Be ready to share once the class has finished. O Each member of the section must have a completed sheet. O When you see the quiet sign please be silent.

Thinking about Text How does the message or theme of this poem connect to the idea of friendship? Think about it silently. Share with your partner. Share with the class.

Poem Reflection After you’ve shared some thoughts with others and heard others from the class, write your own reflection on the back of your poem. What does this poem mean to you? Can you give any life examples of how it relates?

Homework O Letter to Miss Tysko by Friday O Expectations sheet signed by Friday

TGIF! (Thank Goodness It’s Friday!) O It’s time to make your own friendship quote. In your journal, date your first entry and answer the following quotation: O “A good friend is someone who…” O Also, get out your Letter to Miss Tysko and signed syllabus.

Friendship in “Oranges” vs. “The Giving Tree”

When Finished… O Grab the binder cover rubric off the side table and create a cover sheet for your binder. It should include the following: O First and last name clearly written O Your homeroom teacher O A hand drawn object that describes you the most O Color This will be your first art grade of the year.
