Success Criteria When I can spell plurals correctly. When I know the rules of plurals. When I can apply the rules in my writing.
Eye-spy game Resources: Whiteboard, marker pens - various colours, eraser T. introduce topic; plural spelling rules. To assess Ss. previous knowledge going to take it in turns to 'eye-spy' objects/words around the classroom which are plural. Each student takes it in turn to come up with and spell a word. T. or 5. writes on whiteboard. When there is a large enough collection of words T. ask Ss. to spot any patterns in the end plural spellings of the words. Highlight or underline the words. Can expand asking Ss. to think of other words with similar spelling patterns.
If a word ends in f or fe you change the f or fe to the letter v before adding es. Knife - Knives
If a word ends in y with a vowel before the y you……….. add an s Boy - Boys
If a word ends in y with a consonant before the y you... change the y to ie before adding s Baby - Babies
The most common way to make a singular word plural is to... add an s. Pen - Pens
If a word ends in ch,x, sh, or s you... add es. Church - Churches
If a word is an irregular plural... it follows no set spelling rules. Mouse - Mice
