SPELLING RULES Read that again… Yep,you got it! Not only is spelling cool (and it really is), but these are some of the important spelling rules you will need to be cool too.

Rule # 1 Use I before E, except after C, or when sounded as “A” as in: *neighbour *weigh Look at some of these exceptions: Efficient Weird Height Neither Ancient Foreign Caffeine

Rule # 2 To double L or not to double L The letter “y” is going to slip off the line if it does not have the support of TWO L’s dreadfully faithfully Do you see why you repeat the L? Take care to learn the exceptions like: - happily and easily – But if there is no “y”, you need not need to prevent anything from slipping off the line. One L will do. dreadful faithful

Rule # 3 What if the Y gets an extra little tail? When adding ending to words that end with a consonant plus –y change the final y to i UNLESS the ending already begins with i. For example: Beauty  Beautiful Ready  Readily Apply  Applying

Rule # 4 One, two, three for the PLURAL Most nouns make their plural by simply adding an –s to the end, however, the ending determines what the plural will look like. STUDY THE FOLLOWING PLURAL TABLE

Rule # 5 The difference between American and British English Look at the difference: AmericanBritish -or For example: color, flavor, humor -our For example: colour, flavour, humour -ize For example: realize, utilize -ise For example: realise, utilise

The most important rule To every rule there is an exception! Keep this in mind when using these spelling rules. And remember, spelling ALWAYS counts.
