Innovation Kaitlyn Viera

Reflection Rather than using purely written elements, sometimes it is helpful to use graphics for interpretation. When the use of graphics of used or incorporated into interpretation of something, it can be easily understood as it allows people to visualize a message. The use of graphics also leaves under-lying messages up for interpretation. Each person may get a different meaning from viewing an image. Innovation is worth being examined for many reasons. Innovation is always happening. Constantly new things are invented; medical advancements are being made, technological improvements happen all the time. It is important to look at innovation and gain a deeper understanding of why a certain invention, improvement, or advancement happened; to think more critically about it. The material that I have chosen to present in my project does not necessarily have a common theme. Most of the images are technological or medical advancements with a few exceptions.

The graphics that I chose are things that, to me, bring to mind innovation. They all represent a creative solution to a problem. When I began to think of things that represent innovation to me, on the of the first things that came to mind was the bullet proof vests for dogs. I just tried to think of things that I had seen before that to me struck me as a creative, needed solution to a problem. Though my favorite image is the bullet proof vest for dogs, the image that helped me learn about innovation the most was the compass because it made me gain a deeper understanding of how much innovation can affect people and their daily lives and the lasting impact an innovation can have. Although the compass is not necessarily as life changing as other innovations, it represents the fact that innovations can evolve.

Analyzing the images helped me to better understand the images themselves and more about different aspects of innovation. Critically thinking about images allows you to gain valuable information regarding why the image was taken and what message the image was supposed to convey to the audience of which it was intended for. Genre morphing leaves a lot of interpretation up to the individual choosing how to represent the message that they got when viewing the image. It allows the individual to decide the message that the picture represents to them and in what way they could alter the image to better show that message.

Rhetorical Analyses

Rhetorical Analysis 1 Image: #1; Bullet Proof Vest for Dogs Piece- An image of a dog wearing a bullet proof vest specially made for police dogs. The image was used in an article regarding a police officer starting a non profit organization to get bullet proof vests for police dogs. Agent: The image is seen in the article to make people aware of the need for bullet proof vests for dogs. Receiver: The audience of which this picture was intended for is mainly just the general public and maybe police officers to encourage the protection of police dogs. Agenda: The picture was taken to show the protective measures that police forces can take to keep their police dogs safe. Demands: The photographer could have taken the picture to urge police forces to get bullet proof vests for their service dogs. Inquiries: I have no questions regarding the image. Gains: I gained nothing, personally, but police officers have gained the ability to better protect their service dogs and the dogs of course gained safety from this innovation. Motivators: The inventor of the vest for the dogs was motivated to come up with a way to better protect dogs serving with police officers.

Rhetorical Analysis 2 Image: #8; Prosthetic Leg Piece: The image is of an individual who obviously is missing a leg, and showing a prosthetic that gives the individual the benefits physically and aesthetically of having a leg. The main point of the image being to showcase the new prosthetic leg. Agent: The image has been used in several articles talking about breakthroughs in prosthetics. Receiver: The primary audience for this image would be those who work in orthopedics, other medical personnel and people who suffer from missing limbs. Agenda: The goal of the image is to successfully show how prosthetics are evolving; to make people think about how prosthetics change the lives of those who receive them. Demands: The image could urge medical professionals to consider different types of prosthetics, or it could urge people with missing limbs to consider different possibilities in prosthetics. Inquiries: I have no questions about the piece. Gains: I personally did not gain anything from this image, but others may gain valuable information regarding prosthetics by seeing this image and being urged to research more about it. Motivators: The photographer of the picture probably wanted to showcase how the prosthetic leg has evolved and continues to evolve along with other prosthetics.
