Unit 1 - From New World To Revolution Day 5 – 17 th Century Society

 K – What do you know / think you know about life in the 17 th century in North America? (4-5 facts)  W – What questions do you have from the reading (2-3)  L – Will be the exit slip later

 1700 – 300,000  1775 – 2.5 Million  Mass immigration + High Reproductively = Population Boom  20% are slaves  90% owned by Southern Plantation owners

 Social Structure like England's  Social Stratification exists  Gap between rich and poor widens

 Puritans see wealth as a “gift”  In the South society mirrors Feudal Society  Some wish to continue landed aristocracy

 Family is important economically and socially  Marry early – Kids Early  More kids = more farmers = more $  Men vs. Women

 Main source of income was agriculture  Mercantilism was the main basis for the colonial economy
