Comparison of MLA and APA MLAAPA HEADER Labeled as Works Cited Labeled as References AUTHORS OR EDITORS Requires full name of authors and editors on Works Cited page. If more than 3 authors or editors, MLA requires only the first 3 be included. The others are referred to as “et al.” Requires the full last name and only the first initial. All authors and editors must be listed regardless of how many there are TITLES Requires the first letter in every major word in the title be capitalized Only requires that the first letter of the first word of the title be capitalized. PUBLISHER AND PUBLICATION LOCATION Allows for an abbreviated version of publisher’s name Requires the name of the city of publication Requires the full name of the publisher Must provide an abbreviation of state name when city of publication is not well- known

Comparison of MLA and APA INDENTATIONS The first line of the citation on the Works Cited page comes all the way to the left margin. All subsequent lines in the same entry are indented 5 spaces. PAGES The first page number of a citation with subsequent page numbers represented with a + sign The first and every additional page must be listed DATES The date of publication is cited at the end of the entry The date is listed following the author’s name and is presented in brackets
