VERBS WITH IRREGULAR SPELLING CHANGES

Final Stretch Present Tense Test: October 1 st (Next Thursday) In this PowerPoint we will be talking about 3 special verb cases…. Verbs ending in –cer and –cir Verbs ending in –ger and –gir Verbs ending in –guir

Verbs ending in –cer and –cir Most verbs whose infinitives end in –cer and –cir have the ending –zco in the “yo” form in the present tense if the “c” is proceeded by the a vowel. Ejemplo: conocer  yo conozco If the –cer verb is proceeded by a consonant, then the “yo” ending will become –zo. Ejemplo: vencer  yo venzo **This changes only occur in the “yo” form; all other forms are regular.

Practiquemos Lets conjugate the following verbs: agradecer, producir, convencer, and vencer. Take a moment and write down verbs that also take these forms.

Verbs ending in –ger and –gir Most verbs whose infinitives end in –ger and –gir have the ending –jo in the “yo” form. Ejemplo: Proteger  yo protejo Why does this happen? This pattern occurs to preserve the original sound in accordance with the rules for Spanish pronunciation.

Practiquemos Lets conjugate the following verbs: proteger, dirigir, recoger, and elegir (e  i) Take a moment and write down verbs that also take these forms.

Verbs ending in –guir Most verbs ending in –guir have the ending –go in the “yo” form. Ejemplo: Extinguir  yo extingo

Practiquemos Lets conjugate the following verbs: Distinguir, Extinguir, Conseguir (e  i), Seguir (e  i) Take a moment and write down verbs that also take these forms.
