Watching movies on line and via mobile devices will supplement box office spending on filmed entertainment.”

In 2012/2013, the year under review the industry contributed R3.5 billion to the country’s GDP. The industry more than pays for itself with a delivery back to SARS with more than R670 million, with about R420 million above what the dti pays in the form of film incentives. The Western Cape Government’s “growth strategy is based on the province’s comparative advantages. This involves a combination of knowledge intensity, cultural activity, multi-dimensional tourism, lifestyle attractiveness and location”. The Department of Economic Development and Tourism has the statutory and legislative provincial mandate for tourism, trade and investment promotion. It provides strategic direction, facilitation and implementation of initiatives to ensure that there is economic growth and job creation in the film sector. Film sector implementation is effected in the Wesgro public entity (The Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Act, as amended in 2013).
