Introduction There are any risks associated with the bench press, especially if the user does not employ the help of a spotter This interactive mechatronic system can be used to significantly decrease injuries by interacting with the user and monitoring his or her activity while using the bench press This project is a cost effective system that can be used to facilitate safety in the gym environment 3

Project Overview Objective: to design a smart bench press system and demonstrate its capabilities by building a prototype An automatic actuator monitors the user activity and detects indications of struggle Once sensing struggle, the system will engage Once engaged, the system will use an arm actuator system to help the user lift the bench press Additional features improve the workout experience 4

Functions and Features Safety Monitors time taken for user repetitions Significant time delay indicates struggle User Interaction User inputs work out information LCD displays number of remaining repetitions System notifies user when workout is complete 5

Societal Impact Increase Safety for users Reduce number of accidents in the weight room Increase Work out efficiency Monitor user repetitions Improved Experience Safety paramount, efficiency secondary 6
