Voluntary Responsibility Deal

What is the deal? It supports the ambition of: a zero waste economy a low carbon economy By concentrating on three main areas: Waste prevention Sustainable production Recycling

A five year Industry Action Plan: 2014 – Dec 2018 Our voluntary commitment to the Government A partnership between PPA and DEFRA Defining how we will mitigate environmental impacts We control it. We drive it. We do it our way. Voluntary doesn’t mean optional Publishers can’t ignore it and “let the others do it” Annual KPI targets - which we must achieve It’s in all our interests to avoid the alternative...

What’s the alternative? If we fail... the Government will impose Legislation We lose control and influence

3 key areas of focus: Waste Prevention Unsolds – using EPOS & SBR to maximise efficiencies Covermounts – working with mills & MRFs Plastic film – promoting the use of the OPRL scheme Sustainable Production Paper – complying with EUTR and supporting PEFC & FSC Carbon Footprinting – using the PPA’s bespoke calculator Procurement – promoting ethical sourcing and audits Recycling Post-consumer disposal – ‘recycle now’ initiative Recyclability of materials – paper, plastic & covermounts Minimising landfill – exploring ‘zero landfill’ solutions

What will be different by 2018 as a result of the deal? Sales Efficiency Increased to 64% for major retailers using SBR (currently 58%) Recycling of Unsolds Post-consumer recycling rate at 75% or greater (currently 84%!) Carbon Calculator Usage by 70% (currently 38%) of major membership & 10% of smaller membership (currently 1%) Plastic Wrapping Guidelines 75% awareness (currently 43%), with at least 50% adoption by major membership (currently 24%)

We’ve made good progress this year Plastic Wrapping More sign-ups to OPRL scheme, with 3 more major publishers about to commit for Sustainable Paper Supplies PPA declared its support for WWF campaign to fix EUTR loopholes and achieve a 100% sustainable market in timber and paper products by Carbon Footprinting PPA’s carbon calculator – adopted by more members. We’ve widened scope and improved quality of base data, particularly on paper types. Recyclability of Magazines PPA sub-group investigating problem areas and possible solutions.

Recyclability - Problem areas being tackled: Inks Water-based UV Digital Varnishes UV Laminates Glues Spine Hot-dots All are being reviewed with MRFs, mills, printers and industry bodies like INGEDE with aim of providing practical guidance to PPA’s members.

Our performance will be measured We have to report on progress annually The KPI targets are tough but achievable We all have a part to play We all have to keep our side of the deal We can… and must… deliver!
