MR. SMITH’S CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS PROCEDURES AND RULES

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PROCEDURE AND A RULE?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PROCEDURE AND A RULE? Procedures can be rules – but they are NOT always rules. Procedures allow people to function in an acceptable and organized manner. Procedures remove surprises. If you know the procedure you know WHAT to do and HOW to do it even if I am not in the room. Procedures provide a sense of certainty which helps you learn and be successful.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PROCEDURE AND A RULE? (CONT.) Rules provide safety – they protect you, me and property. Rules have consequences – either negative or positive. If you choose not to follow a rule there is a possible negative consequence. If you choose to follow a rule there is a possible positive consequence. You get to choose which consequence you prefer to have by deciding to follow or not follow the rule.

MR. SMITH’S CLASSROOM RULES 1.Follow the Westridge Way - safe, responsible, respectful - for the classroom. 2.The sound of the bell does not mean class is dismissed. Class is dismissed by Mr. Smith. 3.Unless required for a classroom activity cellphones, computers, and any other electronic devices are to be kept out of sight and sound. 4.No food or drink is allowed in the classroom. This includes chewing gum and candy.

THE WESTRIDGE WAY - CLASSROOM 1.You can find the Westridge Way in the online student handbook. 2. It is also posted on the bulletin board by the front window.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO BREAK A RULE First Time – Warning Second Time – Warning Third Time – Possible Time Out & Contact Parent/Guardian Fourth Time – 15 Minute Detention & Contact Parent/Guardian Fifth (or more) Times – Office Referral Severe Disruption – Immediate Removal to Office

IF YOU CHOOSE TO BREAK A RULE (CONT.) NOTE: Choosing not to report for detention will result in receiving the next level of negative consequences and contacting your parent/guardian.

Questions?

PROCEDURES We have many procedures to make sure our class functions in an acceptable and organized manner. Here are SOME of the procedures we have and will practice in class: How to enter the classroom What to do after entering the classroom Where to find the assignment Where to find your textbook What to do when you want Mr. Smith’s attention What I will do when I want your attention

PROCEDURES (CONT.) How the heading on a paper is to be completed Where and how to turn in a paper What to do to get out of your seat Where to find assignments if you have been absent What to do at the dismissal of class What to do if you finish your work early What to do in an emergency situation (fire, tornado, etc.)

MR. SMITH’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

ENTERING THE CLASSROOM Pick up assignment from front table (if one is out). Go to your assigned seat. Place items you brought with you under your desk so the aisles are clear. Get out a pencil or pen. If you need to sharpen your pencil now is the time to do that. Be in your seat WHEN the bell rings.

START OF THE PERIOD Make sure you have the proper heading on your paper (See Procedure for Heading Your Paper) Work on the bell work assignment that is on the screen or board. You have five minutes to silently complete the bell work assignment. If you finish before the five minutes follow the procedure for What to do if you Finish Early.

HEADING YOUR PAPER (LINED PAPER INCLUDES BELL WORK) Name – first and last goes in the upper right hand corner. Hour Number & Seat Number – Write your Period number - seat number under your name. Date – write the date under the period – seat number. Title – centered on top line.

HEADING YOUR PAPER (LINED PAPER INCLUDES BELL WORK) Ima Student 2/11 Aug 13, 2015 Bell Work

WHERE TO FIND YOUR TEXTBOOK Textbooks are located on the bookshelves at the front of the room. Each textbook is numbered. You will use the textbook that has the same number as your assigned seat. All books must be returned to the bookcase in numerical order before the class may be dismissed.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU WANT MY ATTENTION TO OBTAIN THE TEACHER’S ATTENTION RAISE YOUR HAND. DO NOT CALL OUT, START TALKING, OR MAKE OTHER NOISES. WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE TEACHER YOU MAY SPEAK.

WHERE TO FIND THE ASSIGNMENT The assignment will either be written on the board or displayed on the screen. The assignment will also be posted on Mr. Smith’s web back pack and Google Classroom each day. Mr. Smith’s Web Back Pack is found at:

WHAT I WILL DO IF I NEED YOUR ATTENTION When I need your undivided attention you will see me stand up and raise my hand. When you see me raise my hand the procedure is: 1.Freeze – stop what you are doing immediately. 2.Turn & Face Me; pay attention and keep your eyes on me. 3.Do not speak. Listen to what I have to say and follow my directions.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FINISH YOUR WORK EARLY If you have finished all of the activities & assignments for class: 1.Review your work before you turn it in; 2.Work on incomplete past Social Studies assignments; 3.Work on incomplete past assignments from other classes; 4.Use MacBook to work on assignments or entertainment (if all assignments complete). 5.Silently read from a book of your choice; 6.If you did not bring a book, you may borrow one of mine – with collateral.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU NEED TO BORROW SUPPLIES FROM MR. SMITH Raise your hand. When I get to you let me know what you need to borrow (writing utensil, reading book, etc.) Follow me to get what you need. Remove one of your shoes and leave it in the collateral bin located on the back counter. I will give you the item you need. When you return the item to me you may reclaim your shoe. You have a two shoe collateral limit. You may only use your own shoe(s) and may not borrow a shoe from a classmate.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU NEED TO LEAVE THE ROOM Raise your hand. When I get to you let me know what you need to do (go to the restroom, nurse’s office, etc.) Sign out in the Sign Out Book located on the counter. There is a pen on a chain next to it for you to use. Take the hall pass. Quickly go to your destination and return (do not run.) Sign back in when you enter class and return to your seat. Put the hall pass back in the sign out book Only one person may be out of the room at a time.

WHAT TO DO AT THE DISMISSAL OF CLASS When the bell rings make sure ALL classroom items have been returned to their proper place. Gather you personal items that you brought with you. DO NOT leave the room until I indicate that you may leave. This procedure is also a rule.

HOW TO TURN IN AN ASSIGNMENT Have the proper heading on your paper. No spiral notebook paper allowed UNLESS it is perforated. Place your assignment in the basket with you Hour number on it. All assignments need to be facing the same way – heading should be to the right.

WALKING AS A CLASS Line up at the door. Stay to the right side of the hallway and remain quiet. Other classes are trying to work – no talking. We will do this everyday after lunch.
