THE FUR TRADE (CONTINUED) REMEMBER FROM ALL THE WAY BEFORE THE BREAK…?

QUICK REVIEW Look back over your notes on Phase 1 and 2 of the Fur Trade – What are some key points from each Phase?

PHASE THREE OF THE FUR TRADE –

The Hudson’s Bay Company is established in 1670 (yes, the Bay – they’re the same). This become France’s direct competition for trading Why were they so successful? MONOPOLY! As well as combining the two types of imperialist trade that are happening at this point (land and resources) We also have new middlemen emerge out of the woodwork – the Cree and Nakoda became middlemen for both the British and the French.

PHASE THREE OF THE FUR TRADE – New Term: Voyageurs These were men who used canoes and waterways to maintain trade relationships for the French with the First Nations people of the Great Lakes Read the Red Text on pgs HOLD UP! We have now had a lot of different careers that have been created strictly because of the Fur Trade. 1-Minutes brainstorm with the person next to you all of the jobs that didn’t exist until the Fur Trade came along.

Jobs Created Due to the Fur Trade

Cross-Cultural Marriages The French start using marriage as a literal “tool of the trade” Think Critically How often are marriages (in today’s society) arranged? The children of these marriages are given the name “Metis” Who here know that they are Metis or part-Metis? PHASE THREE OF THE FUR TRADE –

PHASE FOUR OF THE FUR TRADE –

Crazy and important things start happening now 1)New France becomes a British Colony (!!!) 2)The North West Company is formed 3)Pemmican starts being traded 4)Fur Trade moves further West and brings the Missionaries with it 5)The Metis people develop a rich culture at Red River
