Operated by JSA for the U.S. Department of Energy Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility 5 Alex Bogacz Pion Collection Horn  Optimization MAP Spring Mtg. May 31, 2014 Single Goal: Maximize muons in the transverse and momentum acceptance of the ring -- Why not directly use this criterion: Phase space of pions from each horn design is different, need to re-match the optics; Need full Monte Carlo simulation for each design; Too much computing power and time Alternative Goals: For horns collecting pions, for which the optics can be matched, Maximize muons within % GeV/c, at the end of the production straight (N μ,end ) Maximize pions within 2000 μm at the end of the horn (N π ) They must be optimized simultaneously – No formula for the analytical correlation of the two. The improvement on the neutrino flux from the optimization - 16% increase with 46 cm Inconel target. A. Liu
