Universal Design of Learning is a framework for flexible learning environments that ensures all students have access to the same curriculum and learning opportunities as their peers (Hall, Meyer, & Rose, 2012). Provides alternatives to methods of instruction; delivery of instruction; material, and methods of student response all with in the general curriculum for every student, regardless of his or her specific area of diversity.

Differentiation Is the process by which teachers adapt, modify, or change their teaching styles and methods in order to meet the needs of all students. ( methods-tips/80089-definition-and-examples-of- differentiation-in-teaching ). methods-tips/80089-definition-and-examples-of- differentiation-in-teaching The goal is to maximize student growth and individual success. Comparison of UDL & Differentiation Place high expectations on students Embrace diversity Concerned with progress of students Allow students to learn differently Involve assessments to see if the students needs/goals are being met.

Contrast of UDL & Differentiation UDLDifferentiation Is a curriculum designed approach to increase flexibility and decrease. Focus on the three brain networks (recognition, strategic and affective networks). A is a teaching theory designed to address the needs of diverse learners. Focus on content: what the students learn, Process: Activities/resources used to assist in learning and Product: Demonstration of learning

How I envision blending UDL & Differentiation in my future classroom I envision blending UDL & differentiation in my future classroom to help all students become successful learners. I will use the Universal Design for Learning in whole group discussion and instruction. Differentiation will be used to provide more specialized instruction to a small group of students. I will use educational websites, books, worksheets, white boards, flash cards, students centers to help provide appropriate level of understanding for the students.

Presenting New Information Prior to introducing new information I will find out what the students know about the topic before disclosing more information. I will began by asking the students open- ended questions on the topic and then move on into introducing the topic. I will use pictures, songs, books, educational websites and thinking maps to get their brains thinking.

How students will demonstrate their prior background knowledge To demonstrate prior knowledge students will K-W-L Chart to list what the student know, wants to know and has learned. Class Brainstorm Web for grades Draw a large circle on the whiteboard or poster paper. Write a word or phrase on the board or paper and let student write as many words that they can that is connected with the word in the circle. PET Dog, Bird,Cat PET Dog, Bird,Cat

Strategies to engage and motivate students Create a safe environment. Make learning fun to all students. Allow students to collaborate with others. Make instructional connections to students daily lives. Encourage students to take an active part in their education. Provide positive feedback.
