GRAMMAR REVIEW: Parts of Speech Using the paragraph on the following slides, identify the nouns (common, proper, collective, compound), pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions.

Nouns I had a very busy summer vacation. To start, I spent a weekend at Bucknell University for Kiwanis, then I traveled to Long Beach Island, New Jersey, to spend Father’s Day with my dad. Once home, it took several days to clean out my closets, drawers, and attic. I donated a dozen bags of clothes to charity. Then I passed some time reading for pleasure, something I rarely get to do during the school year. At the end of July, I spent nine days at the Outer Banks, visiting with my mother’s family, enjoying the beach and ocean (I got stung by a jellyfish!), and eating lots of great seafood. A week after returning home, my parents and I went to Gettysburg, where we took a private tour of the battlefield and visited the Eisenhower farm. The next four days were busy with the PA Kiwanis District Convention, where I reconnected with friends from all over the state. I was also installed as a trustee, for which my parents honored me with a Walter Zeller Fellowship, a monetary contribution to the Kiwanis International Foundation that saves 690 mothers and babies from maternal and neonatal tetanus. I was shocked and so grateful! After we got home, my dad helped me complete the bathroom renovation I began mid-summer. This summer was great, but very tiring; I think I need a vacation to recover from it! How was your summer?

Your Assignment: Due tomorrow. Worth 50 points. For homework, write a brief essay (1 paragraph, 5 sentences min.) about your summer vacation. This doesn’t mean that you had to actually go away somewhere. You may write about the things you did around the area or at home. Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization count! You must write on every other line so that you can label each part of speech ABOVE the word. You may abbreviate as follows: –Noun: n –Pronoun: pn –Verb: v –Adjective: adj –Adverb: adv –Preposition: prep –Conjunction: c Underline the prepositional phrases.
