Real Life Optical LANs “experiences so far and solution enhancements in the pipeline” Rev1

What type of Optical LAN? A passive fibre optic network Provides conventional copper and wireless interfaces to the end user/device End user/device reach up to 80km Based on GPON technology Bi-directional, single fibre operation 2.5Gb/s down, 1.25Gb/s up Optimised to deliver “continuous streaming” services Video and voice traffic does not impact data traffic Minimizes Ethernet “re-transmits” clogging up the network Only four elements OLT, splitter, single mode fibre & ONU Totally future proof cabling infrastructure

What have we achieved so far? Almost 2000 user optical interfaces now in operation Over 20 different sites around the country Over 1800 different businesses connected A wide range of applications High speed business WAN interfaces High performance, high security LANs

What have we learned? Bullet proof performance Fantastic upload speeds enable new business opportunities & applications Impact of continuous traffic (voice and video) minimised Fit and forget CapEx and OpEx savings greater than anticipated CapEx down by 50 to 80% OpEx down by 90% User experiences are exceeding expectations Word of mouth driving new businesses and user connections every month

Network design lessons Work Area/User interface Re-use UTP connections where possible Telephony connections are “free” Basic wireless connectivity is “free” Wireless connectivity enhancements High density/challenging EMI areas use external WAPs and directional antennas Roaming functionality uses intelligent WAPs and controller Splitter location Impacts physical network management (patching) Reduces the amount/impact of cabling Optimise reach (up to 20km with standard connectivity and 64 way split) Satellite and terrestrial TV integration Overlay on primary fibre or use second fibre WAN connection options Fibre preferred or wireless/existing “high” speed copper

Installation lessons Work Area/User interface Minimise access time WAN connection Partner carefully…….. QoS and SLA is critical Central office rack space drastically reduced (9U for up to 512 ONU connections) Intermediate/Telecoms closet Completely eliminated (no space, power, air conditioning, security required) Connectivity Must be appropriate for the specific environment Bend insensitive fibre simplifies cable routing Cables can also be run in power cable ducts if needed

One network – multiple services High speed data Fast back up/disaster recovery Voice IP and PoTS Video IP, DVB-T, DVB-S, CATV, CCTV Building management services Wired or wireless connection Wireless coverage Dual band WLAN High density Roaming functionality

What’s in the pipeline? New ONU with Z-wave connectivity Up to 254 IOT (Internet Of Things) devices wirelessly connected Enhances integration of building management services In addition to dual band WLAN, RJ45, RJ11 & USB connections Integrated wall outlet simplifies deployment Pre-terminated cabling options RapidFibre – single ended conventional connectivity Cable pulling skills required with 50% fusion splice time reduction DiaFlex – fully connectorised Only cable pulling skills required, NO fusion splicing “Lossless” connections Titanium, lossless connectivity Increase range by 5km per connector pair PoE extender integrated into OLAN Extend connection of PoE devices up to 3km from power supply Extend UPS protection of remote devices to 3km radius

Summary Almost 2000 user optical interfaces now in operation Bullet proof performance CapEx (80%) and OpEx (90%) savings even greater than anticipated User experiences are exceeding expectations

High reliability, high bandwidth network solutions using 21 st Century technology
