A gateway is a node (router) in a computer network, a key stopping point for data on its way to or from other networks. A wireless gateway routes packets from a wireless LAN to another network, wired or wireless WAN. A wireless gateway is a device that allows a computer and other Internet-enabled machines to access a shared wireless Internet connection.

The device manages multiple uses and allocates bandwidth in a way that most modems can’t, at least not on their own. They can also provide firewall and hosting functions. They provide network address translation (NAT) functionality, so multiple user can use the internet with a single public IP. acts like a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) to assign IPs automatically to devices connected to the network.
