2014 Scotland County Schools State of Education 2014 Scotland County Schools State of Education

District-wide Celebrations Celebrating 175 years of Public Education in NC. Smoothest opening of school in the past several years. Teachers and administrators are excited and inspired to ‘Grow Greatness’ in our district. Opportunities to meet with various student and community groups and leaders. Offering breakfast and lunch ‘at no cost’ to all students through the Community Eligibility Provision. An average of 3,833 students ride our buses every day. Over 412,000 miles were driven transporting students in and there was not a single injury to a child while on a school bus.

Overall performance composite improved 12.4 points. 13 out of 14 schools improved their overall performance composite. 4-year cohort graduation rate improved 5.5 points. Represents the highest graduation rate ever for SCS. ACT improved 3.9 points on proficiency. 89.2% of our third-graders met the Read to Achieve expectations. SCS met 75.5% of our measureable goals from the State in , compared to the State only meeting 55.2% of theirs. Curriculum and Instruction/Testing and Accountability Celebrations

Partnership with RCC has expanded. In , 25 career and college promise courses are now available to our high school students. Over $2.2 million dollars in scholarships were awarded to SHS and SEarCH seniors in All five of our Pre-K programs (IEJ, Laurel Hill, South Scotland, Washington Park, Wagram) have earned the coveted 5-star ECERS rating. Representatives from the BOE and County Commissioners are meeting monthly. Clear audit with zero findings. Finance Department recognitions and awards: The John Locke Foundation’s grade ‘A’ for transparency. The Association of School Business Officials International Certificate of Excellence in Accounting. Scotland County Schools is one out of only 36 districts in the state to receive this award this year. The Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. Scotland County Schools is among only 35 districts to receive this honor. The North Carolina State Board of Education Achievement in Financial Resource Management. Mr. Jay Toland was one of 43 Finance Officers within the state to be recognized. Additionally commendable was that Mr. Toland and the Finance Department were one of eleven (out of 115) districts that received all three awards. Finance Department Celebrations
