Status of AWAKE Installation and Integration Presented 9/3/2016 at the AWAKE Collaboration Meeting Ans Pardons, for the AWAKE CP4 team

Installation Highlights – Services and Laser Room – Radiological Declassification – Plasma Cell Integration Highlights – Fire Compartments (for installation Q1-Q2 2016) – SMI Diagnostic Lines(for Q2 2016) – Spectrometer Optical Line (for Q2 2017) Coming to CERN AWAKE – Preparation (courses, access, PPE, dosimeter) – Safety (evacuation, fire safety, equipment safety) 2

Services and Laser Room : services and infrastructure installed for run (except where not yet requested!) AWAKE facility is now ready to receive experiment’s equipment (e.g. plasma cell, laser, SMI diagnostics). Photos from Laser room (TSG40).

Radiological Classification 4 Supervised: < 15µSv/h Limited Stay: <2mSv/h CNGS heritage: area is a limited stay controlled radiation area Works done: CNGS dismantling (horn cooling system, ventilation units, etc.), separation (shielding wall, fire doors, fences), decontamination. Photos from TSG4. Since 14/12/2015: AWAKE is a supervised radiation area (EDMS )

Plasma Cell 5 The AWAKE plasma cell was successfully installed in the AWAKE tunnel 11/2/2016. (see also CERN news and Bulletin week7) Challenges: Road transport from EHN1 test hall 45° descent in pit 15m long convoy Next for the plasma cell Alignment Filling heat circuit with new oil (no fire risk) Production and installation plasma cell ends with Rubidium circuit Next for the facility: installation of SMI diagnostics

Fire Compartments 6 CNGSAWAKE Compared to CNGS, the AWAKE facility has a higher fuel load installed (*) and, unlike CNGS, its operation requires regular access with local setting-up and upgrades during most of the year. Changes needed : 6 new access doors (decouple combined CNGS doors) 16 new certified fire doors+walls Ventilation duct modification and new dampers ~20 additional dry-riser for fire water Additional coring for smoke extraction and trench for new fire water tubes Additional smoke detection TAG41 Status and planning 2016: All modifications are integrated Door installation Jan-Jun Trench and core Mar CV works Mar-May (*) Klystron oil + racks + plasma oil + cables

SMI Diagnostic Lines 7 Challenges: Minimize length and nr of bends (only 90-degrees) Pass around shielding Alignment/precision/rigidity Personnel and material passage in TCC4 must be respected (avoid dismantling SMI lines) Fire compartment separation TCC4/TSG41 must be kept Status and planning: Integration study finished Construction drawings for approval Installation May 2016 Aluminium girders (not shown) will lie on the red tables, targets are removable. Courtesy of C. Cappelli, V. Clerc and N. Chritin TCC4 TSG41

Spectrometer Optical Line Challenges: ~1m wide at source (services pass through TSG42) Closed light guide needed from screen to camera (removable?) Mirrors + supports are large Evacuation passage from TCC4 must be respected Fire compartment separation TCC4/TSG4 must be kept Passage in TSG42 can be blocked Status and planning: Integration study on-going Installation Q TSG4TCC4 TSG42 Evacuation from TSG4/TCC4 Courtesy of V. Clerc and F. Galleazzi

Coming to AWAKE 9 Extracted from “Safety Information and Requirements for Access to AWAKE” EDMS AIS AccountBudget CodeBe at CERN Get registered  get your AIS accountx Sign up for class room safety course (self-rescue mask) xx Order or collect helmet, lamp, safety shoes (PPE) and self-rescue mask xx Follow (five) on-line courses (2h)x Request TAG41 accessx Add your intervention to IMPACTx Follow class room course at CERN (2h)x Get a personal dosimeter (AM only)x

Working in AWAKE Wear at all times: Access card, helmet with frontal light, safety shoes, personal dosimeter, self-rescue mask (use additional safety equipment where your equipment or work requires it) Respect the planning slot for your activities. Respect at all times the safety rules and guidelines, including: 10 Extracted from “Safety Information and Requirements for Access to AWAKE” EDMS

Services are installed, infrastructure is available Integration studies experiment 2016 as good as finished, looking ahead to 2017 Facility ready for experiment’s equipment installation – Respect planning slots – Request missing services asap – Prepare your access to AWAKE – Work well-prepared, work safely 11
