Brookes 2020 Strategy SESE Strategy for Enhancing the Student Experience PESE Programme for Enhancing the Student Experience

‘Project 10’ Presents opportunities to: Share good practice across all programmes and partners Further enhance and invest in our relationship and add value to the experience of our students within each ACP institution ‘Get more things right’

ACP ‘Audit’ January-March 2012 College ‘Roadshows’: visiting staff and students at each partner college Meeting with Faculty and Directorate staff at Brookes Development of an ‘ACP Student Experience Enhancement Plan’ April – June 2012 Consolidated our findings in to six ‘common themes’ Identity and visibility Pre-arrival and induction experiences On programme Administration and Liaison ACP staff development/support areas ‘Other’ So, what have we been doing?

Identity and Visibility Issues of ‘duel identity’?.....how important is the Brookes Experience anyway? visibility and distinctiveness access to opportunities: awareness of ‘entitlements’ and events

Pre-arrival and induction experiences “I really want to come to Brookes… …for a meaningful experience” Separate out the process of enrolment from induction/orientation Pre-arrival correspondence can be confusing Induction experiences are variable

On-programme Our partners do some really good stuff positively influenced by small class sizes, vocationally- trained/experienced staff, concentrated timetables… We do some really good complementary stuff positively influenced by our academic/scholarly activity, experience in (critical) skills development, graduate employability…. Part of our distinctiveness: Graduate Attributes (GAs) More info to follow in the Faulty workshops this afternoon

On-programme Programme-related Core Activities (PCAs) Brookes-based To occur within the first six weeks of programme start 1. Induction/ orientation Partner-based Reinforces programme-level activity/sessions 2. Academic literacy/study skills session Partner-based Progression to level 6 and employment Additional Brookes support 3. Progression session

Administration and Liaison But…some inconsistencies within and across Faculties A&W College Business, Mgmt and Comms Equine Science Animal Behaviour Computing Early Years Classroom Support Engineering Brookes ACP A&W BridgwaterBrooklandsOCVCSwindonSolihull ACP virtual space for staff

Staff Development Staff Development Areas to include: Teaching HE in FE Peer observations (ACP staff visiting Brookes?) How to use the journal databases Dissertation Supervisor Training University Regs and Policy updates Invitation to Faculty-based internal research conferences Invitation to Brookes Learning and Teaching conference….March 27 th, 2013 OCSLD bespoke ACP staff development opportunities More to follow….

‘Other’ e.g. Student Support Who does what and where? Simply a matter of clarifying and signposting? Need to be mindful of equality of access across the ACP Partners remain the primary point of contact BUT Student Support maps will be available AND…..there will be the Professional Network Hub

Professional Networks Oxford Brookes Teams ABCDEFGH

For example Oxford Brookes Teams ABCareersDEFGH Representatives from each Partner (and Brookes) will form the membership of each Professional Network: Collaborative advice and support Share good practice Continual service development across the ACP

Moving forward Implementing and embedding student experience enhancement activities relating to each of the six common themes identified Further developing our relationships…
