Less Bison More Land By Greer Durham 8B 8th hour

❖ The use of Bison as a resource by Native Americans and the impact on the Natives once the Bison was exterminated. My Topic

The use of the Bison ❖ The Native Americans utilized the Bison in many ways. ❖ Meat for eating ❖ Hide for clothing & shelter ❖ Bones for tools ❖ Hooves for glue ❖ Tail for rope & medicine ❖ Hair for headdresses ❖ Horns for decoration ❖ Feces to fuel fire They used the:

Getting Rid of the Natives ❖ The Settlers came to America searching for more land and expand Westward. ❖ Most of the land was occupied by Native Americans. ❖ The Settlers wanted to acquire the Native lands. ❖ The Settlers became aware of the importance of the Bison to the Natives. ❖ The Settlers decided to act on this information by eliminating the animal and essential starving the Natives off their land. ❖ Around the 1820‘s the settlers slaughtered over 20 million Bison just so they could have the Native land, for sport and fashion. ❖ They killed the bison, took the meat, and left the body to rot. ❖ They killed all but 0.9% of the native population.

❖ Slaughtered Bison 1870’s

Saving the Bison ❖ Today there are well over 500,000 bison in North America thanks to James “Scotty” Philip. He bought and bred Bison to help preserve this animal from extinction. The species is now off the endangered species list and is now roaming free in Yellowstone National Park.

Your turn. ❖ What do you think of the American expansion west? ❖ Do you think you would have done the same as our ancestors?

Native American Land ❖ Land transferred from Indians to Whites Indian Land bbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
