Welcome to Key Stage /14 Parents’ Information Evening

General Information Children may arrive at school from Whistle is blown at 8.50 for children to come into the school. The register is taken at 9am and the main black gates are closed. If you arrive after the gate is closed please take your child to the office to be registered. School ends at 3.15pm for the children in KS1. The main black gate is open from 3pm. If you are late your child may be taken to After School Club and you may be charged. All uniform and PE kit should be clearly named. PE kit should be in school at all times as PE days may vary. Jewellery should not be worn. Newsletters on Friday give information about the following week. These are on the website – paper copies can be requested from the office. Every child has a communication diary – this needs to be brought into school everyday.

Our Curriculum Literacy Numeracy Science Phonics – daily Guided reading Topic afternoons – Geography, History, Music, Art, DT ICT RE PE Daily assemblies – Class, whole school, Key Stage, singing and celebration.

What are we learning this half term ? Skills sheets and activities are on the website Literacy- lists, captions labels, traditional tales, stories and rhymes Science- Ourselves Geography- comparing different parts of the local community Art- collage. How can we create primary and secondary colours ? Music- beat and rhythm. Examining moods in music. Looking at long and short sounds PSHE- What does it feel like to belong to a group. How can we improve the school environment? Our theme is books and authors based on the Elmer books

Literacy Reading Writing (including Big Write) Speaking and listening Phonics

Talk Homework and Big Write Launched in assembly and is adapted to meet the needs of Year One Paper copy sent home and on website The emphasis is talk! Come with lots of ideas ! In class the children will talk about the topic and generate ideas together Modelled write by the teacher Independent writing ( include own ideas or use ideas from the model ) Write in small groups not as a whole class Praise! Praise! Praise!

Numeracy Maths is very practical in school and is recorded through photographs, post it notes etc. Shape, Space and Measures – describing 3D and 2D shapes and their properties. Measuring, ordering and comparing items. Order events. Counting – very practical – being done every day. Writing numbers, reading numbers, addition and subtractions, 1 more, 1 less etc. Calculations Data handling - sort and classify objects Using and applying Big Maths – We are hoping to start this after October half term.

Science SC1: Scientific Enquiry: Planning, obtaining then presenting evidence and evaluating. SC2: Life processes and living things: Humans and other animals, plants and variation. SC3: Materials and their properties: Grouping materials and changing materials. SC4: Physical processes: Electricity, light and sound and forces.

Continuous Provision

Key Worker Help children settle into their new classroom. Talk with the parents about their child. Keep an extra special eye on how children are settling during the first term Observe and support children learning in continuous provision and make notes for all children and other key workers. Help support home/school partnership. Keep the communication books up to date. Your child’s key worker is identified in their communication book

Topics to be covered over the year Books and Authors Houses and Homes Heroes Land or Sea? In the style of…? Free choice including Transition Week.

Homework Big Talk for Big Write homework is sent home as a paper copy every Friday. You will also find it on the website, both on the weekly newsletter and on our class page. The topic is to be discussed ready for the following Friday. Reading – children should read for at least ten minutes every day. Please write a comment in the Communication Book each time your child has read and let us know when the book needs to be changed. Numeracy –Talking maths homework/activity based Spelling – spellings related to your child’s phonics phase are sent home every Friday. Homework Club

Reading Please try to hear your child read each day for at least 10 minutes. This does not have to be their school reading book. Please record in their Communication Book that you have heard them read. Reading books can be changed every day if you are happy with they way they have read their book to you. It must be clear in the diary that the book needs changing. Please send reading bags and Communication Diaries to school each day.
