Autumn: Half Term 2 Habitats

Literacy We will be learning the story of the Gruffalo and using this to help us with our own descriptive writing. We will be learning lots of new vocabulary. Talk to your child about the new words they learn in class each day. We practise our reading and phonics daily. Please take time to check your child’s book bag and read with them each day at home.

We will have a new ‘talking topic’ each half term related to our work in literacy. Language for discussion Sometimes it is acceptable to lie. Discuss. Monsters are dangerous. Discuss.

Maths In maths we will be focusing on addition and subtraction facts and the equals (=) sign. The children will be learning different skills to help them with solving mental and written problems. The equals symbol shows that what is on the left of the sign is equal in value or amount to what is on the right of the sign. Examples: = 7 10 = = 20 – = 10 – = 2 x 3 60 seconds = 1 minute Fact Families Addition and subtraction facts that have the same numbers are related. A fact family has 3 numbers. You can create 4 number sentences using them. 2 are addition sentences and 2 are subtraction sentences. See the pattern:

Maths: Log on to MyMaths and work through the activities. There will be a new maths challenge set each week. See your teacher for login details. Reading: Check your child’s book bag every night, there will be a new reading book and high frequency words for your child to practise. Handwriting: Use your child’s letter formation card to practise handwriting. How to help your child at home
