About Migrant Workers No real accurate number of overseas workers Some NGO said more than 6 to 7 Millions Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Hongkong, Taiwan, Singapore are most optional destinations Malaysia employed more than 2 million. Majority working in domestic workers and mostly are women.

Low education is reflected on migrant working women. Estimated / year left their home land for new countries Number of remittances is Rp 100 Billion ( 100 million $ US )

Condition Most of them working in informal sectors Domestic Workers Building & Constructions Plantations Low educational background Limited skill belongs to them Illiteracy on worker rights and protections Vulnerable to harassment, exploitation, trafficking, blackmail etc

Problems -Problems facing by Overseas workers are very definitely complicated. Act and regulation have low protection Government’s less concern in handling issues on migrant Institutions addressing migrants are not well cooperated so that problems frequently are misunderstood. Problems are mostly internal dominated ( pre departure handling is poorly managed ) Migrant are not well recognized as real workers Low inspection are mostly derived from recruitment. Low enforcement doest not implement toughly

What Union Can do Support and promote migrant workers’ rights. Bilateral agreement should linked between National Center ( sending and receiving countries ) Criticize the week point of Migrant Act and regulations and making drafts. Set up networking to Global union and affiliate.

Cooperation -Inserting human/workers rights based on ILO conventions or relating clauses. -Trade Union, Voluntary social organizations, and other parties should be united -Stake holders ( parliaments members, government and employers association) should continoustly meet and discuss on migrants issues -Govt takes action to whom are violated the rules

Decent Work Ratification of ILO convention on Grant should be done both sending and receiving countries. (beside ILO core conventions ) ILO should be pro active to decide countries are safe or vulnerable to migrants Receiving countries should recognize migrant’s rights. Discriminations should be totally eliminated ( citizens and migrants) Trade Unions at all level should promote humanitarianism, civilization values for peaceful work and world.

Thank you
